A Thompson narrative

Our history starts

It all began in the 1920s

A Thompson narrative

It began in 1927, when William Thompson began trading as a tea merchant in Bethnal Green.

After William passed away, his son, Bill a commodity broker, returned to the family Tea business but he stopped using ‘lead-lined’ tea chests that had been used by his father.

Industry was steadily being rebuilt after the results of World War II.

Bill Thompson began to recycle the emerging cardboard board box by turning it inside out and then reusing them by disguising the existing artwork.

Bill was an early advocate for recycling corrugated packaging.

Our history continues

From 1950 through to 1972

The place is Basildon and Bill Thompson’s vision in packaging gave him insight to set up a corrugated box manufacturing plant.

It later moved in 1971 to Pulham St. Mary, Norfolk.

History in the making

1984 a date for the diary

Norwich Corrugated Board thrived in Norfolk. It was so successful, that two of Bill Thompson’s  sons, Nick and Martin, decided that Norwich and East Anglia would benefit from new corrugated case manufacturing service.

The future

The best choice

Continued investment by Thompson Packaging included a new extension to the building (you can see the building and development in the Thompson News link).  Consequently, Thompson Packaging still remain competitively priced as an independent manufacturer of quality boxes with exceptional customer service.

With environmental responsibility, many companies are choosing renewable alternatives to packaging over damaging plastics. The best choice is must be corrugated board packaging as a sound ecologically alternative.

Continued Investment in machinery increases quality, speed and efficiency

During 2018, the completion of a 1,000 square meter extension became the home of a automatic die cutting machine – this increased capacity by 1000%.

In 2019 Thompson Packaging will see the arrival of an advanced case making machine.

This will increase case making capacity, improve quality and efficiency and result in good competitive price breaks.
